Life at the Old Pecan Inn

Recently I had a family contact me regarding an Extended Family Session. The session was going to be a surprise gift for the parents, Gary and Pam, in celebration of their 45th wedding anniversary. As I drove to the location I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful the Point Enterprise area was, which is located just outside of Mexia, Texas. This quaint little community was covered in large trees and the golden sun was peeking through the leaves kissing the ground.

As I drove up the driveway and approached the family home, I noticed an eager family standing outside waiting on me. They were all so welcoming and proceeded to show me around the property where they’d like the portraits to be taken. They had a couch in the front pecan grove, a large windmill out back looking across the green landscape as the sun was setting and a 1971 red Ranchero parked out front. I was looking forward to spending time with this wonderful family that was so excited about capturing the precious memories, along with the history of Gary and Pam, for generations to come.

Old_Pecan_Inn.png

As I walked around with the family from place to place I heard several stories about so many places and things on the property. It was clear that family means a lot to each of them! Family is embedded into nearly everything on the property - pecan trees, the original house with the stones from another piece of family property, the Ranchero and the windmill. After all, the property has been in the family since it was purchased in 1887 by the Franks Family.

Every family has a story...welcome to ours.

History of the Old Pecan Inn

T.L. Franks was a Civil War Confederate Army veteran traveled from Houston in search of sandy land to purchase for farming, as well as living. He found 45 acres of a perfect piece of sandy land in Point Enterprise, Texas in 1887.

T.L. used the land to raise food and crops to sustain his family. Cotton and strawberries were raised and sold to help provide the family with money. He planted pecan trees in an orchard and 10 of the original pecan trees are now massive and still growing. They are now over 130 years old and still produce pecans!

T.L. Franks had a great-great-granddaughter named Pamela Sue Franks that was born in 1955 while her father, Dan Franks, was in seminary and her mother, Sue Wiggins Franks, was teaching school. Pam grew up in a military family as her parents served 30 years in the United States Air Force.

Pam visited Point Enterprise growing up during the summers, but never lived in Texas. However, she dreamed of someday living on the farm she loved to visit. Pam would quilt with her grandmother, Edna, in the Point Enterprise Clubhouse with the Quilting Club when she visited. As a young girl, she often dreamed of quilting in that same clubhouse when she lived on the farm.

Gary and Pam

Gary bought his 1971 Ford Ranchero brand new in November of 1971 for $3100 when he was a new airman in the United States Air Force stationed in Denver, Colorado.

One year later, Gary and Pam met in the Edwards Air Force Base Chapel. After Pam graduated in 1973, they had their first date in the red Ranchero. He was so nervous, but he prepared note cards to assist him in keeping the conversation going throughout the date. The first card read, “Hi, my name is Gary Smith.” The second card read, “How are you doing tonight?” These were followed by several more cards!

The note cards must have worked because they exchanged vows on June 21st, 1975 in the same chapel where they first met in 1972.

In 1981 they welcomed their daughter, Amity, into their lives and 8 years later in 1989, they welcomed their son, Daniel, into their family as well. Amity is married to Will and they have 2 boys of their own. Daniel is married to Chante’ and they have 2 daughters of their own.

Gary still owns his 1971 Ford Ranchero, 49 years later. Pam has stuck with Gary for 45 years now. She says she married him as she thought it would be “an adventure.” It turns out it’s been more of an adventure than she could have ever imagined!

Life at the Old Pecan Inn

The Franks Family almost sold the farm in 1998 when Pam’s grandmother, Edna, passed away and none of the brothers wanted the farm. Pam called her dad and told him, “Do NOT sell the farm! Gary and I will buy it someday when we finish all this moving around in the military.” Her dad agreed to buy the farm from his two brothers so he could sell it to Pam someday.

In 2019, after 31 years in the United States Air Force, Pam’s dream of owning and living on the Frank’s farm came to fruition as Pam and Gary bought the Franks farm along with the old farmhouse. In 2000, they built a new home on the property. They decided to restore the old farmhouse and turn it into a bed and breakfast which is now called the Old Pecan Inn. The original pecan orchard separates the two houses.

Pam quilts every Monday and Wednesday afternoon in the Point Enterprise Clubhouse, just as she dreamed of doing as a young girl. Some of the quilters are still alive who quilted with Pam’s grandmother, Edna.

Gary and Pam spell Point EnterpriZE with a “Z” because they say it is a prize to live there.

Trash That Dress!

In December of 2018, Mike wanted to propose to Mysti, but not in an ordinary way - he wanted to do something REALLY special for her! At the time I was searching for one guy that was about to pop the question so I could document it for them through photographs. Mike reached out to me and we set the plan in motion.

Mike proposed!!

Fast forward a couple of months when the wedding plans are beginning to take shape…

Mysti contacted me asking if I would photograph their wedding. Of course I said I would love to! During 2019 the plan took off in many directions as they explored all the awesome venues - one was even an old caboose! At one point they decided on an elopement on a cruise trip, but Mike’s family would not be thrilled about missing their big day. As their plans changed so did their family’s plans. One of the daughter’s was going to join the navy after graduation and they definitely wanted her to be in the bridal party so they made plans for a backyard wedding in Mexia, Texas before she left for the military. But then the completely unexpected happen…COVID - 19!

Texas was suddenly under a shelter in place order and no one knew how long that would last. The days turned into weeks. The weeks turned into months. How much longer could this possibly go on?? Slowly the state began to reopen, but there were still restrictions in place. One such restriction was the amount of people in one gathering. That definitely put a damper on wedding plans!

One day Mysti messaged me and said she was so over all the planning and waiting on restrictions to lift that her and Mike decided to have a simple family wedding before her daughter left to the navy so instead of the typical wedding photograph she wanted to trash her dress. And that is exactly what we planned - complete with a cake fight (after sanitizing hands) and lots of toilet paper!

Spending this time with this family was so refreshing and carefree, especially during a time of quarantine. It was amazing to see the entire family having so much fun with each other creating crazy memories their cherish forever!

Because when you stop and look around, this life is pretty amazing.

7 Tips for Working From Home (and homeschooling) That ACTUALLY Work

Spring Break finally arrived in early March and I was really looking forward to hanging out around the house, sleeping in, staying in pajamas until noon and not driving the kids to and from school. I know the kids were looking forward to it as well. As much as they enjoy school, they also welcome the breaks throughout the year. It’s definitely a time to relax and unwind as we spend more time together. Towards the end of spring break we received notice that school would not resume for at least one more week. At this time I was honestly happy as I wasn’t ready for those relaxing, carefree days to come to an end quite yet. I was naive in thinking that the virus would pass within one short week. By the end of that week we received another notice saying school would not resume for another week. Soon after that, the governor spoke and closed schools. Then later he closed them for longer. And then later he closed them for the remainder of the school year.

During this time at some point many parents began working from home as well. At this point, roughly two months later, many parents continue to work from home while homeschooling their children. As a small business owner I have worked from home for almost six years now. I had a daily schedule of what had to be done (and this schedule definitely took awhile for me to figure out). Now the kids were home. And they had packets of school work to be completed and turned in. My schedule quickly flew out the window and I was freaking out! How can I possibly get my work done PLUS help my kids get their work done? Weeks went by and my stress level was raising by each passing day. Finally I got to a point where I said, “I cannot do this anymore. I have to put some systems into place.”

I tried many things. Most did not work. I saw other parents on Facebook posting awesome charts to keep their family on a perfect schedule with wonderfully decorated home school areas for their kids to work with a nearby work station for the parents so they could all work harmoniously together. Yeah, that’s definitely not my house! I need to work free from distractions. My phone is set to not make any noise and I have silenced all notifications besides texts or calls from my immediate family. Suddenly I had kids that need me so much more than they ever did before! I started reading lots of articles and really trying to find a system that would work for our chaotic family. I came up with seven tips that worked for us - our far from perfect family.

7 Tips for Working From Home (and homeschooling) That ACTUALLY Work

To schedule or not to schedule. That is the question!

Some families need a definite schedule. Nearly everything is a set time dictating when an activity begins and ends. Other families are more flexible. Everything has a rough starting and stopping time. Only you know your family and know what will work. Go with that! For my family, we fall into the more flexible category. If you know me, I show up to things around a certain time rather than a certain time. Once I realized that a set schedule does not work for our family, I embraced the fluidity of all things that did not require a specific time. For example, today I had a Zoom meeting for my advocacy work. This started at 10 am. I was sure to arrive on time for the meeting as that is what was expected of me. However, this is also the time we are every so slowly working through school work. I had to let the kids wander off and find their way to YouTube after their Discover Education video ended so I could participate in the meeting. After the meeting I just reeled the kids back in and got them busy on the next assignment.

Expectations. Productivity looks different for everyone.

If you normally work outside the home your work day is typically eight hours long. It’s understandable why working eight hours is often viewed as being productive. You will most likely have to change your perspective about productivity when you work from home. Begin by prioritizing the items that MUST be completed that day and let the others fall into the “work in progress” category. When I finally stopped trying to accomplish every single task on my list and began each day as a new day and focused on the tasks that were the most urgent, my stress level decreased dramatically. The same with the kids’ school work. Each day they have reading, math, writing, science, social studies, music and physical education to complete. Hate to say it, but physical education work rarely gets done. Why? Because that can be incorporated into so many other things that I don’t feel I need to follow a specific lesson. The kids can go outside and play softball, tag, go on a hike or walk, jump on the trampoline. Sure it’s not a structured lesson, but they’re receiving physical education. The only thing that changed was the expectation.

Be an early bird or a night owl.

Are you an early riser? Or are you a night owl? Whichever you are, own it and be productive! Some parents like to wake up early before everyone else and get that uninterrupted time to get some work done. Others, like myself, prefer to stay up late after everyone is asleep to get work done. I find there are less distractions and I’m more creative late at night. Take advantage of the time of day you are most likely to be able to focus to tackle your work.

Boundaries MUST be set.

When the homeschooling began I found that I was suddenly choosing to make my phone calls later in the afternoon when school work was done for the day. However, some days the school work goes quicker than others. Some days took hours. Literally. Like four painstakingly long hours! This would put my calls on hold until the late afternoon. Not the best time to make calls in my opinion. I had to set some boundaries because the lack of them was driving me absolutely crazy. One day I simply told them, “I have to make a phone call. You work on x, y and z and do NOT interrupt me or be noisy.” Much to my surprise, they actually followed directions! When they did start to get loud, I just put up my finger (which is a signal for them that they better fix it). It was like magic!

Do I dare say it…but consider relaxing screen time.

As parents we hear about limiting screen time frequently. There is definitely a stereotype for the parents that use an “electronic babysitter.” While I’m not saying let them play on a screen all day every day, perhaps relaxing your normal rules so you can get some extra work done for the day. There are lots of educational apps (many are free during this time) that the kids can be “working on” while you’re working. It’s a win, win situation!

Food. Do they EVER stop eating?

Consider making snacks and drinks easily accessible to the kids so they don’t have to interrupt you every single time they are hungry. Seriously though, when did they start eating so much? Now I don’t buy lots of pre-packaged snacks or drinks because they are expensive and my older kids eat like five at a time. Instead we have fruits, yogurt and sandwich items they can easily consume with little to no help from me while I’m working. Some parents choose to put together snack kits the night before. Cups are on the bottom shelf so they can easily pour themselves a drink of milk or get some water. What are some ways your kids can be self sufficient when they get hungry or thirsty?

BREATHE!

This is an incredibly difficult time for families. Be gentle on yourself. It’s alright if things aren’t “perfect.” Be gentle on your kids. This is tough for them as well. I found that we need breaks from our house for our mental health so we go on weekly “field trips” and get our work done after we get back. Our field trips usually include visiting a local state park and going for a hike with the dog after a picnic. It’s a chance to forget about being home and enjoy each other surrounded by nature. And to be honest, my kids are learning a lot from these trips. We talk about our surroundings and visit places we normally don’t frequent. Today we are going to visit a peach farm. The kids are excited! Why? It’s just a peach farm, but right now that peach farm is something different than our house. I find that they appreciate these trips more than ever and therefore truly experience them. Even on days that we don’t go on a “field trip” we take breaks. We hit it hard for about 45 minutes and then take a small break just to reset before going back to work again.

You are not working from home; you are at home during a crisis trying to work.

Change of Plans

Sometimes it ends up different and it is better that way.
— unknown

April 10, 2020 was a day that many were anxiously awaiting. This was the day that Jacob and Hannah would exchange vows in front of their family and friends. The anticipated wedding was originally going to take place at a stunning venue in Axtell, Texas, however something completely unexpected happened - COVID-19. Everyone hoped for the pandemic to be over by this date. But that did not happen. The venue cancelled, along with many of the vendors. This wedding was definitely going to happen on April 10th - no matter what!

There was a change in plans. The wedding would now be small and include a few of their closest family and friends. But where would the wedding take place now since the venue canceled? They considered a friend’s living room and a back yard. After all, rain chances were also moving in and out of the forecast for that day so they needed to take that into consideration. Eventually they decided on a beautiful and secluded piece of property near Axtell, Texas. It seemed as if the new plan was falling into place.

The big day finally arrived and everyone quickly checked the skies and forecast for the day and they were pleasantly surprised. No rain was in the forecast at all! And the temperature was going to be absolutely perfect - not too hot, not too cold. It was a perfect 75 degrees and sunny!

Jacob and Hannah

The two originally met because Jacob was friends with Hannah’s brother. Eventually they went on their first date on October 23, 2017. They ate breakfast at Cracker Barrel and spent the entire day together. He later proposed to her in Dallas at a botanical garden.

Fast forward two and a half years. They spend their date nights going to dinner followed by visiting Sonic for ice cream or drinks before heading home to watch Netflix. They describe their relationship as “definitely not average” with a laughing emoji! When asked what they liked best about each other, Jacob said he likes “everything” about Hannah and Hannah said she likes that Jacob is incredibly patient with her.

The Big Day

The week leading up to the wedding I talked to Hannah’s mother frequently. Plans were changing and Hannah was upset her plans were no longer a reality and instead they were just “winging it.” At some point, the stress seemed to disappear and everything seemed to fall into place perfectly. In fact, I heard many family and friends (including the bride and groom) say they felt this wedding was better than the original one they had planned. It was important that they wed on April 10th and on April 10th that is exactly what happened.

First Birthday Party on a Budget

A Guide to One Year Birthday Parties on a Budget

First birthdays are a BIG deal! It is truly a reason to party. While this once in a lifetime event will surely be a day to remember, you can definitely keep costs down to a minimum with a little extra planning beforehand. In fact, you can throw your little one an awesome party without breaking the bank AND special memories will be made. Here are some tips for throwing a budget friendly first birthday party!

smith_family_photograpy_cake_smash_1

1. Decorations. When thinking about how you’d like to decorate your party consider items that can be reused for other occasions. For example, a simple burlap banner is gender neutral and can be used for any age - young and old! Another great decorating idea is to print some of the photos from the little one’s first year and cake smash session. Afterwards you can use these to decorate your home.

2. Simple Themes. It’s easy to go overboard on everything associated with a theme. Instead, opt for a generalized theme. Many items can be made instead of purchased. Just tell yourself, you don’t need ALL the matching items! Choose one piece and then find other items that match colors instead of the specific theme.

3. Outfits. It’s perfectly fine if you don’t get your little one a special outfit that says “birthday” on it. In fact, if it doesn’t say “birthday” on it, they will be able to get more wear out of it.

4. Goodie Bags. To give goodie bags or not to give goodie bags. Either one is perfectly acceptable. As a mom, I honestly prefer for my kids to not receive a goodie bag. They were at a party to spend time with their loved one, therefore a goodie bag is not necessary. However, if you opt to hand out goodie bags, think about buying in bulk to save money.

5. Food. Let’s face it, your little one will not remember this party. This party will be remembered by you and your friends and family. This is where a bulk of your budget will be spent. After all, this is a day to be remembered! With that being said, you can save money by preparing the food yourself. Think sandwiches, salads, crackers and cheese trays, fruit and veggie trays - and don’t forget snacks for the little party-goers such as cereals and goldfish snacks. Here’s another tip with regards to the food. Schedule the party between meals so you won’t have to provide a full meal.

6. Invitations. Consider sending digital invitations as opposed to paper ones. It will save you time and money! It’s easier to keep track of attendees, better for the environment and often times they’re FREE!

7. Cake. Custom cakes are expensive. Consider baking your own if you like to bake. If not, the bakery at the local supermarket often provides complimentary smash cakes with the purchase of a birthday cake.

8. Venue. Ditch the expensive venues and use the local park or your own backyard. The only drawback to this is that you are responsible for the clean up, but it will save you a lot of money.

Remember, this is a party to celebrate your family and this milestone in your chlid’s life. Don’t forget to mingle and enjoy it!

Dear Class of 2020

It seems everyone has had to make some adjustments in their daily schedules and lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some parents are working from home, while others are “essential” and must go out of the house to work. Students are home doing class work on computers or on packets prepared by their teachers. Nearly everyone in the United States is living under “shelter in place” orders. Holiday celebrations are being canceled. Weddings are being postponed. Funerals are taking place with less than ten people in attendance. All because there cannot be gatherings of more than ten people. People stand in lines outside grocery stores so they can buy food for their families and cross their fingers that they can buy one of the many items that have been hoarded. I know the feeling of excitement as I saw toilet paper on the shelf earlier this week!

THIS MOMENT is as TRUE a TESTAMENT there is to the HUMAN SPIRIT.
— Meghan Markle

While all of this is tough on everyone, I have so much empathy for the high school seniors. They won’t have their last day of high school. Most seniors won’t have a prom. Graduations will be canceled or postponed. They won’t play their last baseball/softball game, run their last track meet or play their last tennis match. Senior trips have been canceled and there won’t be any senior pranks or senior skip day. These memories (and so much more) are the moments they should remember forever and talk about at high school reunions years later. Instead seniors are inside their homes doing school work on a computer. They’re not allowed to hang out with friends and make memories while they’re still “kids.”

Parents of seniors won’t get to watch their child prepare for prom, walk across the stage to receive their diploma or cheer their child on during their last game. They will miss those tears as their child gets on a bus to leave for their senior trip and anxiously await photos while they are so far away. They won’t get to laugh at their senior prank or hear about their crazy senior skip day plans.

These moments are priceless.

One day I was scrolling on Facebook and I saw this video. I cried. A lot. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I have had three children graduate in recent years and that very moment made me so incredibly proud of them - each for different reasons. When Bradley graduated, my oldest, graduated I was so proud. At that moment I realized he was no longer a child. I was looking forward to his future while at the same time wanting to keep him close so I could continue to protect him. The world can be a cruel place sometimes. When William graduated, my adopted son, I was also proud of him, however it was for a different reason. I was proud of him for growing into the young man he now was. He had to overcome so many obstacles to get to this point. When Ethan graduated I was proud of him as well, but for yet another reason. School was always a struggle for him. He had plenty of time in the office for silly boy things - including being dubbed part of the “glitter gang” during the senior prank. They all graduated and to this day I can remember how proud I was of each of them.

I am sad for the seniors. I am sad for the parents. I felt like I should do something for them, but wasn’t sure what I could do. Suddenly I had an idea! I offered complimentary senior sessions in a county without a shelter in place order. There was one stipulation with these sessions. We had to practice social distancing. I met four amazing seniors, each with their own story. All of them were saddened by this loss of their senior year. I hope they’ll treasure these photographs as one “normal” thing during their senior year.

Crazy Like You

March 14th, 2020 was a gloomy day in Ben Hur, Texas with rain chances coming and going…basically a typical Texas day in the spring. This was anything but a typical day however! This was the day Matthew and Jennifer would say, “I Do,” in front of family and friends.

Matthew and Jennifer met a couple of years ago through a mutual friend. There was a near instant connection between them. Their first date was dinner at Jennifer’s favorite restaurant, Texas Roadhouse, followed by dancing. Eventually Matthew knew what he needed to do. Propose.

One night they had some family visiting from out of state and everyone went out to dinner. Afterwards, Jennifer and Matthew went on a walk to the Waco Suspension Bridge. At some point, Jennifer turns around to look at Matthew and he is on one knee with a ring. Of course, she said…”YES!”

She said, “YES!” Matthew wrote, “Well it happened! After keeping this in for I don't even know how long! I got the chance to ask my best friend to spend the rest of our days together and she said yes! I'm so excited to see what the future holds for …

She said, “YES!” Matthew wrote, “Well it happened! After keeping this in for I don't even know how long! I got the chance to ask my best friend to spend the rest of our days together and she said yes! I'm so excited to see what the future holds for us! I love you.”

As they continued to grow as a couple during this engagement, they continued dating and getting to know each other even more. Their perfect date night includes dinner followed by watching a movie from the $5 bin at Wal-Mart at home snuggled up on the couch. They have developed a strong relationship that is wild and suspenseful, yet loving and beautiful. Their life together can be compared to the movie Starsky and Hutch - Matthew gets into trouble and Jennifer gets him out of it!

Jennifer loves the way Matthew smiles at her and their son with his amazing blue eyes. Matthew is an amazing father to their son. Matthew loves Jennifer’s hair, eyes and how Jennifer makes him feel so loved.

It's a Texas Thing

I’ve been looking forward to the Texas Bluebonnet season since 2020 began. I even watched a weather forecaster talk about how amazing the blooms would be this year due to our recent weather. I was beyond excited and couldn’t wait to photograph some of my amazing clients in the abundant fields of purple flowers. I kept my eye on the roadways for the blooms so I could begin offering these sessions. Finally I saw blooms! And then almost just at the same time, COVID 19 swept the United States. I feared many families would miss out on the Texas tradition of bluebonnet portraits due to social distancing. Some families scheduled sessions and I am incredibly happy that they aren’t missing out on the once a year opportunity. Other families are choosing to pass this year. I’d like to share five tips with those that are choosing to skip professional bluebonnet portrait sessions this year.

Tip Number One.  Photograph in the early morning or late evening hours.  I know these hours aren't ideal, but once you experience the light at these times of the day you will never go back to noon bluebonnet photos.  I've had a number of clients that are amazed at the difference this makes!  This portrait of the Loewen Family was taken around 9:00 am on a Monday morning.  Dad JUST got off work and their baby normally naps around this time, but they are very happy they adjusted their schedule for one day to make this happen.

This bluebonnet photograph was taken in the late afternoon about a half hour before sunset.

This bluebonnet photograph was taken in the late afternoon about a half hour before sunset.

Tip Number Two.  Take your bluebonnet photographs when they first bloom before they get trampled down.  I prefer to take them at my husband's family ranch in Limestone County for a few reasons - the patch is on private property so I'm the only photographer that uses this area for photographs and it's safe.  It's away from roads so little ones are not going to run around accidentally run into traffic.  I encourage kiddos to have fun at their sessions and this is the perfect place because there is an abundance of area to run around and enjoy themselves to let loose some energy between poses.  This portrait was the first bluebonnet session of the season.  Notice how full and tall the flowers are!  It makes a difference, trust me.

Marble_Falls_2020 (3) wm.png

Tip Number Three.  Always bring a blanket or stool to sit on.  Some people do not like to sit in the flowers.  It can be overwhelming when they are almost as tall as you when you're sitting down and they are completely surrounding you.  I always bring several different things to sit on - a blanket, a metal bucket, and a wooden crate.  Sometimes I also bring a red wagon.  Baby Caleb loved the red wagon!

Marble_Falls_2020 (2) wm.png

Tip Number Four.  Get on their level.  Often times people stand above the person/people being photographed and just snap a quick photo.  That works for a quick snapshot, but if you're wanting something a little more posed try bending down and getting on their level.  During sessions I squat, kneel, even lay on the ground to get different angles.  For a group portrait such as this one of the Schmedthorst Family, I wanted all of them looking directly at me so I could see their faces.  This meant I had to sit down and get on their level.  Since mom was in the middle, I needed to be level with her.

Marble_Falls_2020 (8) wm.png

Tip Number Five.  HAVE FUN!!  AND STAY SAFE!!  Before sitting little ones down, do a quick check for ants, snakes, and other creatures.  You can't see them all, but you can check the immediate area you are going to use.  I've learned this lesson the hard way...and continue to learn this lesson the hard way (I'm pretty stubborn apparently).  I always check for my clients, but obviously never check where I'm standing or sitting.  More than a few times I have stood in a fire ant pile to get that "perfect" shot.  One time, I even SAT in a fire ant pile!  So be mindful when entering a patch of bluebonnets and remember that insects and creatures call that patch home.

If you’re interested in a Bluebonnet Session this season, we still have some availability on Saturday, March 28th in the afternoon in Waco, Texas.

Over the Years: The Milstead Family

The other day I was talking to my favorite person (my grandma Jo) on the phone and we ended up talking about the career paths we chose.  She was a nurse for most of her adult working years and I was an elementary school teacher for five years until I decided to resign and begin my photography business.  She told me there have been times when she thought about doing something besides nursing, but looking back now she couldn't imagine doing anything else.  She LOVED nursing!  Then she asked me what I career I would have chosen if I could start all over again.  As I thought, I honestly couldn't think of any other career choices I would have made.

I loved teaching, but I didn't love the confines of teaching.  I loved that no two days were ever the same.  I loved having to adapt and be flexible throughout the day as different situations arose.  I loved the students and coworkers.  But I did not love the schedule.  I felt very confined.  When I decided to resign I immediately felt a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders and I could now breathe freely.

I absolutely LOVE being a photographer!  I love nearly everything about it - besides paying taxes.  I love making my own schedule.  I love creating wall art for families that will be treasured for years to come.  I love it when clients tell me that my work captures so many emotions.  But most of all I love meeting new people and connecting with them!  I love to capture them year after year and create beautiful wall art that showcases their family!  For this reason I have decided to begin a series which focuses on my loyal clients over the years titled, "Over the Years."

The Milstead Family

I first met Bailey and Jack in April of 2017 when they asked me to photograph their families on Jack’s family land in Kosse. I distinctly remember driving up to the house and I couldn’t believe how many trees they were surrounded by. Truly stunning property and I was really looking forward to their session! As I walked from my vehicle to meet Bailey, she quickly gave me a head’s up that Jack’s mother had dementia. Later on in the session, Bailey and Jack told me that these photographs would be so important to their family and they wanted these to showcase the love their family has for one another. They also expressed that it was extremely important to have these taken while Ms. Milstead was still able to enjoy the session. Since that first meeting, I have photographed their family the following year and then later I was fortunate enough to photograph their stunning wedding. It is such an honor to be considered the family photographer to the Milstead Family and I’m truly looking forward to capturing many more memories for them!

April 2017 - So much love in this family portrait…even though little man was not happy about photos at all! We finally realized he would be happy if he ate applesauce. So he ate applesauce :)

During this session, I enjoyed spending time with the family, but we did end up capturing some fun images of just Jack and Bailey as well. Jack’s father had an antique car that we even used for some of those images.

The following year Bailey contacted me about a family session at the same beautiful property in Kosse. I remember this session as vividly as the first. It was a cloudy, windy day. So windy in fact that we contemplated rescheduling, but decided to go ahead with it since Jack had such a crazy work schedule. A good portion of the photographs were taken up close to the shrubs around the house because they were blocking the wind.

A few months later Jack and Bailey decided to have their engagement session on my husband’s family land near Personville. The weather was amazing! I love being around their family, but it was great to spend some time with just the two of them. It was a great way to learn more about them before their wedding later that year.

The week leading up to the wedding of Jack and Bailey on Saturday, September 15, 2018 was filled with tons of rain. The forecast was even calling for high rain chances for that Saturday. As the week crept by, those high rain chances slowly begin to decrease. As everyone continued to cross their fingers, Saturday arrived and those rain chances were pretty much gone. The sun was shining and it was a perfectly calm day. It was a picture perfect day - literally!

That Saturday at 6:30 pm, under clear skies, Jack and Bailey would say, “I Do,” at the beautiful Wind Dancer Retreat in Bryan, Texas.

What to Wear: Engagements

You’ve scheduled your portrait session and suddenly you begin to wonder what outfits you should wear. Outfits can make or break a portrait session and shouldn’t go overlooked. After all, you want to look your absolute best! For this reason, I decided to create a series titled, “What to Wear,” in which I will give you ideas with regards to your outfits for each type of portrait session - Engagement, Family, Maternity and Lifestyle Newborn.

Engagement Portrait Sessions

Consider the Season

To start with, make sure your outfit choices are appropriate for the season. Spring and Summer are the most popular times for engagement sessions so choose breathable clothing that you will feel comfortable in. Shorter hemlines are a great look for warmer weather as well. Check the weather and make sure your outfit will be comfortable so you can have the best portraits taken as possible.

Jacob and Hannah’s Engagement Session took place in January of a particularly warm “winter” in Central Texas. Jacob is comfortable in a short sleeved button up shirt, while Hannah is wearing a flowing dress with light material.

Make It Personal

An engagement session is all about you and your fiance. Choose your favorite colors that showcase your personal style. It’s also fun to bring other outfits and accessories to switch out throughout the session. You can easily do this by switching out shoes or jewelry - or even adding a fun, stylish hat!

Hannah created a look which showcased her personality with stylish shoes and a fun hat that complemented them.

Complement Each Other…But Not Too Much

Choosing outfits that complement each other while allowing you both to express yourself can be tricky, but there are way to make it work. Clothing with overly expressive patterns and take away from the overall effect of the portrait. Instead choose clothing that complements each other’s outfit. I can’t stress enough how important it is to plan ahead of time rather than waiting until the last minute. This will give you ample time to put several outfits together to determine what works best. Take special care not to match. Too much of one color will make your looks blend together instead of making each of you “pop.” This is a chance to show off how well you both work together without being identical.

Jacob is wearing a shirt with a pattern on it while Hannah is wearing solid colors that are found within the pattern on Jacob’s shirt. Their outfits complement, not match.

Location, Location, Location

The location might not seem like it matters when choosing outfits, however it does. The location should have a strong influence of what you decide to wear. Your outfits should help you feel comfortable at the chosen location which in turn complements your personalities and style.

Jacob and Hannah chose a location in a wooded park with plenty of paved walkways.

Five Steps for Perfect Milk Bath Portraits

We’ve all seen those beautiful dreamy milk bath portraits of mothers and/or babies. The subjects look incredibly peaceful, yet extremely artistic. Some are full of props such as flowers, while others use a very minimal amount of props - or no props at all. Either way, there are five steps for creating the perfect milk bath portrait.

pumpkin_milk_bath_smith_family_photography

Five Steps for Perfect Milk Bath Portraits

  1. Gather your materials. You will need:

    • milk - honestly any kind of milk will do the trick. I use whole milk. I have even used a mother’s breast-milk before!

    • camera - WITH a camera strap. You don’t want your fancy camera to fall into the milk bath!

    • bathtub - think out of the box…or tub shall we say! You don’t have to have a nice claw foot bathtub. You can use a kiddie pool, bucket…anything that is big enough for the person’s body that will hold water.

  2. Get ready.

    • Fill the tub with water and then add the milk. There’s no magic amount of milk to add. Just add enough to create the opaqueness that you are seeking. Bonus tip - it’s easier to add more milk than to take it away.

    • Keep the water temperature in mind. You want the water warm enough for your subject to be comfortable, but not so warm the flowers or other props are negatively affected.

  3. Lighting. If you are interested in creating a dreamy effect, natural light from a window will be the best lighting since it will be soft. If natural light is not an option, consider using a flash pointed to the ceiling.

  4. Perspective. Feel free to stand on the sides of the tub to get a shot direct above your subject. Play with angles by trying to capture the scene from a different perspective. Use ladders or chairs to stand on as well to help you get in position to capture an image from a unique perspective.

  5. Capture the image. Experiment with different poses and movement. Make waves, splash, rise from the water, etc. Take more photos than you think you’ll need because one the tub is drained, it’s drained.

Run a bath, add some milk and give milk bath photography a try! Photograph a friend or get a friend to photograph you - everyone looks great in a milk bath! Whatever you do, have fun and enjoy the experience!

THE SCHMEDTHORST FAMILY

I first met Mark and Adria in April of 2016 when they were referred to me by Adria’s sister. Mark and Adria wanted to have a session to showcase their daughters at that moment in time. I had a great time getting to know them and still to do this day I can remember just how different the two girls were from one another. One is very silly and outgoing while the other was extremely shy! Even though their personalities were (and still are) completely different, they are both equally gorgeous. In the spring of 2017, the Schmedthorst Family booked a Bluebonnet Limited Edition Session for their family portraits. Their youngest daughter cried for most of the first half of the session because she was so nervous about being photographed. We continued with the session in hopes that she would warm up to the idea at some point before the sun set for the day. Sure enough, she did indeed warm up to the idea and even began to enjoy herself! I suggested to Mark and Adria that we could go back to the main bluebonnet patch to “reshoot” the images of her crying from earlier on in the session and we did just that. Over the year, I have had the pleasure of photographing this amazing family SEVEN times and I’m looking forward to many more sessions with the Schmedthorst Family!

Twice as Nice

The winter of 2019 was exceptionally warm and the day of December 14th was no exception. The sun was shining brightly radiated heat over the small town of Mart, Texas. On this day, Justin and Lauren exchanged vows in the presence of their family and friends at the Mart Community Center.

Justin and Lauren first met at her birthday party when she was celebrating her second birthday. Several years later they met again at a dodge-ball tournament when they were in their early teens. Fast forward a few more years and the two met once again at On the Border in Waco, Texas, where they were both employed. They soon began dating. They went out to eat a meal at Freddy’s where they enjoyed each other’s company on their very first date.

Justin actually proposed TWICE! He first asked for Lauren’s hand in marriage while they were enjoying a cruise on December 17th, which was the anniversary of their first meeting. Justin gave Lauren a gold ring - which she lost! Justin gave Lauren another ring and proposed to her for the second time in front of the Martin Luther King Memorial next to the Suspension Bridge at Indian Springs Park in Waco, Texas. It was at this time that they also added a lock to the rails. You can read more about their engagement on the blog, Serendipity.

Lauren later learned that when Justin and Lauren reunited at On the Border, Justin went home and told his mother that the second he saw her he knew he was going to marry her. And marry her he did!

Justin and Lauren are a perfect couple that truly compliment each other. A typical date night for them includes take out and keeping things natural and comfortable. They can be described as, “Your weird matches my weird.” Their personalities are genuine and unique - truly a match for each other! Lauren said the movie, “Unintentionally Weird,” best represents their life together.

What a Wonderful Day

Simple. Pure. Fun. Caring. Unique.

When I first met Amber and Ryan at their engagement session in September I just knew their wedding day was going to be nothing short of a wonderful day! They are both so laid back and genuinely care deeply about one another. They are always laughing as they enjoy each other’s company. It was such an experience to be around the two of them together!

When I asked them to describe their relationship in FIVE words, Ryan’s response was…Can we do this later? Well played Ryan, well played. That is in fact FIVE words, but not quite what I had in mind! When I finally got their answer, they came up with…simple, pure, fun, caring and unique. And I do believe every single one of those traits describe their relationship.

Simple. Their wedding was simple, yet elegant. No crazy decorations, just some pumpkins, candles and flower arrangements.

Pure. Their wedding was very clean, pure and the venue, Springfield Hall, was a great choice for this look.

Fun. These two laugh all the time! You can’t help but laugh when you’re around them as well.

Caring. They care about each other deeply, but it doesn’t stop there. They care about their family and friends as well.

Unique. Their wedding was wonderful and unique in so many ways. I loved the use of balloons at their exit with lights inside of them!

The Perfect Blend

Marriage brought us together, but being a family is just what’s in our hearts.
— unknown

September 21st, 2019 was a beautiful Texas summer day that was absolutely perfect for a beautiful wedding at Tucker Hall in Waco, Texas! The venue was decorated with bright colors that included fuchsia, teal and coral. On this day Mackenzie and David became Mr. and Mrs. Carrizales.

The details of the wedding were absolutely stunning!

The details of the wedding were absolutely stunning!

Mackenzie and David grew up knowing each other as family friends. Years later they reconnected through social media and the rest is history. Their first date was filled with great conversation and laughter as the two caught up with one another at the winery. The two continued to get to know each other over time and soon David decided to get down on one knee and ask for Mackenzie’s hand in marriage after one of their many romantic nights.

Mackenzie and David both have children from previous relationships and now they are an official blended family. It was amazing to watch them interact with each other throughout the evening. They all got along extremely well shared many laughs between all six of them! When you watch them you can’t help but smile right along with them. They are all so carefree, loving and genuine.

A look at the bride and groom (and their children) getting ready for their big day!

A look at the bride and groom (and their children) getting ready for their big day!

Mackenzie and David are surrounded by LOTS of family and friends! In fact, Mackenzie couldn’t choose just one Matron of Honor! She had two plus one Maid of Honor. David has a large family and one challenge that they warned me about was getting all of them into one photograph. But we did it!

After the ceremony and the portraits it was time for the first dances. This included Mackenzie and David of course, as well as David with his mother. This also included Mackenzie and her son - which was full of surprises!

Mother and Son Dance. Their dance started off as an emotional dance, but then suddenly turned into them dancing to songs like “The Git Up,” “Superman” and everything in between!

Mom, What's for Dinner?

“Mom, what’s for dinner?”

The four little words that I despise! I won’t lie, I do not like to cook. I am not good at it, nor do I care to be good at it. But apparently it’s important for my family to eat. Eating out is very expensive, especially when you have a family of six kids! That means I must cook. Ugh.

Over the years (what honestly feels like a thousand years in cooking time) I have learned a few shortcuts. And I LOVE cooking shortcuts! If you’re like me and despise cooking, I hope these shortcuts help you as much as they have helped me.

Shortcut #1 - Plan a Menu

Planning a menu makes me only think about cooking dinner ONCE a week rather than seven days a week. This makes the other six days much more pleasurable! I actually bought a magnetic menu board that is on our refrigerator so every single person in the house can easily answer the dreaded mom question of “What’s for dinner?” And just like that, the kids stopped asking me this question at noon every single day of every single week of every single month of every single year.

Shortcut #2 - Online Grocery Shopping

Online grocery shopping is an absolute lifesaver! Seriously. If you haven’t tried it, you are missing out. I didn’t jump on this trend as soon as it emerged. I like being in control and felt like the shoppers wouldn’t select the correct items. One day I decided to try it and that is the day my grocery shopping habits changed forever! Not only am I saving lots of time, but I am saving lots of money since I’m no longer roaming around the store adding things to my cart that I don’t need, like cookies. I am also saving my sanity. With six kids, that means I never go to the grocery store alone. And when kids go to the grocery store, they always ask for a gazillion things they don’t need.

Shortcut #3 - Instapot

I purchased our Instapot earlier this year when I found a great sale that I couldn’t pass up. I have been hearing about how great these magical cookers are, but was honestly scared of it blowing up and burning my family with scalding food. A tad irrational I know, but those scary stories get posted on Facebook and they must be true, right? But the price was right, so why not give it a try! Let me tell you, that thing is one fantastic invention! It saves so much time with cooking and cleanup and everything we have made in it has been delicious. Just last night I made a tender roast in just 90 minutes with literally three minute of prep time which consisted of removing the packaging from the roast and opening a few cans. No other pots or pans were used either which made clean up a breeze!

Recipe: Lazy Mom’s Roast

Buy a roast, any cut you’d like. Buy two or three cans of Campbell’s Beefy Mushroom Soup. Remove the packaging from the roast and put the roast into the Instapot. Open the cans of soup and pour them over the roast. Use either two or three cans, enough to cover most of the roast. You can add some water if you’d like, but I prefer it with just soup. Cook in the Instapot for 90 minutes. Let the steam release naturally. Enjoy with mashed potatoes and your favorite vegetables.

Community Spotlight: Meet Kathy!

There are so many people that surround each of us every single day that give us 110%. Just think for a few minutes. Who do you interact with day after day and each time you are treated very well…consistently? Who do you see doing their job well day in and day out without expecting anything in return? These people often want no recognition and often times they don’t feel like they’re doing anything spectacular, they’re simply doing what they love doing without thinking about it. These genuine people within our communities need to be recognized. They can be recognized with a simple gesture, such as thank you or you’re appreciated.

I have decided to recognize these people within our communities by rewarding them with a free photo session documenting them doing what they do and a mini session for their family as well. I will need help finding these people within our communities and I hope people with nominate deserving community members using our nomination form. One awesome community member will be featured each quarter.

Meet Kathy!

I first met Kathy late last year when I was working with LARAS House Shelter in Mexia, Texas. I was asked to be the photographer for the calendar they were putting together as a fundraiser. During this time I realized that I really enjoyed working with the animals, as well as working with Kathy. She LOVES animals and it shows! She is one of the most genuine people that I have ever met. She is extremely kind and generous and very honest. She is not afraid to speak her mind. I have never met anyone quite like her and she definitely needs to be recognized for not only being a wonderful human being, but for all the hard work she puts into each and every dog at LARAS House. She does so much more than feed, water and clean. As she completes these tasks she is also socializing with the dogs and getting to know each of them.

If you’ve had a family session with Smith Family Photography you know that I ALWAYS try to get a few shots in of mom and dad together, with no children. Why? Well, most couples don’t have their portraits taken. They have family portraits taken and generally they focus on the children. After all, the children are drastically changing year after year and parents want that documented that they often simply forget about THEIR portrait.

When I ask parents if they’d like a portrait together they usually look at each other with a, “What to you think?,” look and they both shrug their shoulders. So I make them pose together and try my best to keep the kids occupied for a few seconds to get a few poses in. Afterwards I ask them how long it’s been since they’ve had their photo taken together they almost always tell me that they haven’t had one professionally taken together since their wedding. SINCE THEIR WEDDING!! Definitely time to have that updated!

For this reason I decided to offer Date Night Sessions. We began offering these sessions in July of 2019 and quickly booked three of the four sessions for the year!

Couples Date Night ad.jpg

The first couple that took advantage of this offer was the Schmedthorst Family. They were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary this past summer and really wanted portraits of just the two of them to showcases the love they have for one another. Twenty-five years…that is amazing!

I have had many sessions with the Schmedthorst Family over the years. They take advantage of our mini sessions throughout the year to document the growth and changes of their children so I was extremely happy when they decided to book a session just for the two of them to celebrate such an amazing day.

At this time there is still one remaining Date Night Session. If you’re interested in learning more, please send me a message and we’ll get your Date Night Session on the calendar.

Don't Blink

Trust me friend a hundred years goes faster than you think so don’t blink.

I absolutely LOVE this time of year - the kiddos goes back to school! While I joke about them being out of my hair for seven hours a day, five days a week, for nine months out of the year, I have another reason I love this time of year.

back to school.jpg

I love this time of year for “nerdy” reasons. I love new supplies, especially fun pens. I love cute notebooks so I can make daily lists. I just love the back to school aisles at stores! Shopping for supplies with kids is a chaotic nightmare, but yet at the same time it’s so awesome to see their little faces light up and get excited about school. I love this excitement!

At the same time, this time of year saddens me to a point. The first day of school slaps me in the face with the realization that my babies are quickly growing up as I snap that notorious “first day of school” photo. Then the Facebook Memory pops up showing me the previous “first day of school” photos over the years. THIS makes you realize just how fast they are growing up!

When my daughter, Lily, started preschool I decided to start a tradition in which I would use the same location each year to document the year to year changes. She looks forward to this almost as much as I do every August!
